On this day 4 years ago, my friend Bonnie and I officially co-founded Brisbane’s first permanent domestic violence memorial Recently I was asked by a local man why we chose to create a memorial as opposed to a candlelight vigil I explained that to us, we wanted to give a permanent space to our local community...a space where grieving family members left behind, could come to remember their loved ones (as opposed to just going to a cemetery) We wanted to create a permanent space, where city goers - every time they sat down next to the waterfall at Emma Miller Place - would see the words on our plaque and be reminded of the widespread scourge of domestic violence We wanted to create a space where every time locals passed by, they would be encouraged to think of what they could do to be an action taker, not a bystander Soberingly, today is not only the anniversary of our memorial... it is also the 10 year anniversary of the murder of Bianca Faith Girven, a Brisbane mother and daughter whose life was taken on this day in 2010 by her ex partner Her mother Sonia Anderson - a well known domestic violence advocate - spoke at the opening of our memorial, and today, we think of both Sonia and her daughter Today, we honour Bianca and the thousands of women, men and children whose lives have been taken through domestic homicide . . 💜 No more silence. Let’s talk about #domesticviolence + #coronavirus ___________ Just like coronavirus, domestic violence is an insidious, invisible scourge; one that is killing and infecting members of our society on a daily basis It’s a ‘social and cultural virus’ that is taking the lives of men, women and children — and in particular, one woman every week But while victims of Covid19 and those at risk can seek solace in their homes, victims of domestic violence cannot. Because right now, the risk of fatality is greater within their own four walls than in public As a survivor myself, and someone who now mentors many other DV survivors, I am really worried about how much this form of social terrorism will spike in months to come as more people are forced into isolation What will happen to the victims whose abusive partners are forced to work from home, giving them no reprieve from daily terror? . . How many abusers will take advantage of their partner’s loss of income or work, using it as another way to increase control? . . What happens when victims who have been planning their escape — and require national or international travel to do so — are grounded; forced to stay inside and unable to get to family or friends who could provide safety? . . I decided to write about this issue, speaking with DV experts as well as survivors.
